Can you share a moment or project that made you realize you were on the right path?
My first encounter with the Steadicam began with my curiosity about cinema and imaging technologies. As I explored the power of camera movement in film narrative, I realized that the fluid and dynamic shots the Steadicam provided deeply impressed me.
Its ability to transcend traditional methods, immerse the audience more fully in the scene, and allow the director to express their creative vision freely fueled my interest in this field. Furthermore, the idea of creating aesthetically impressive images by overcoming technical challenges formed the basis of my passion for Steadicam work.

You’ve been part of the FilmmakersWorld community since day one. What has that connection meant to you over the years?
Being a part of the FilmmakersWorld community from day one has been invaluable to me. This connection is more than just a network; it’s a space where creativity, collaboration, and a supportive environment come together. Over the years, this community has allowed me to encounter diverse perspectives, share my work, and grow both personally and professionally.
Being part of a community that understands the challenges and joys of filmmaking has continually inspired and motivated me. This experience has shaped my approach to storytelling and reminded me that filmmaking is not just about art; it’s also about building strong relationships.
What’s your approach when you receive a new brief? Where does your preparation begin?
When I receive a new brief, I first try to clearly understand the project’s core goals and expectations. I thoroughly analyze elements such as the director’s vision, the scene’s atmosphere, and the emotion being conveyed. Then, I evaluate the location and technical requirements, focusing on how to achieve the most effective and fluid shots with the Steadicam.
Equipment checks, rehearsal shoots, and creating action plans aligned with the scene are crucial steps in my preparation process. This way, I aim to provide the most appropriate solutions for the project’s needs, both technically and creatively.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about the role of a Steadicam Operator?
A major misconception about the Steadicam Operator role is that the job is simply about “carrying a camera” or “stabilizing a camera”. However, Steadicam operation requires not only technical skill but also strong physical stamina, rhythm, and the ability to move in harmony with the scene.
Furthermore, it is crucial for the operator to understand the director’s vision, synchronize with the actors in the scene, and make creative decisions that support the narrative. Therefore, Steadicam operation is not only a technical role but also an artistic and performance-oriented one.
How do you stay sharp, both physically and technically, in such a demanding role?
Staying sharp, both physically and technically, in such a demanding role requires disciplined preparation and constant practice. Physically, I strengthen my body through regular exercise and endurance training, focusing particularly on developing my core muscles and balance.
This helps me maintain my performance during long shoots. Technically, I’m very familiar with my equipment and perform regular maintenance and calibration. I also prioritize rehearsals to ensure I’m aligned with the scene and the director’s vision.
Constant learning and exploring new techniques also play a significant role in staying sharp. All of this helps me stay physically and mentally prepared.

Are there any tools, rigs, or techniques you find yourself returning to, no matter the project?
Yes, there are some basic tools and techniques I always use, no matter the project. First and foremost, I use a Steadicam rig carefully balanced according to the camera and shooting conditions; this ensures both image stability and reduces fatigue during long shoots.
I also constantly work on my body mechanics and breathing techniques, ensuring my movements are fluid and controlled. Rehearsals are essential; rehearsing the scene and movements over and over helps me internalize the rhythm and timing of the shot.
These basic tools and techniques help me deliver my best performance on every project.
Has virtual production or new tech shifted the way you approach your work?
Yes, virtual production and new technologies have significantly impacted my approach to my work. Being able to visualize scenes and camera movements digitally before shooting makes the planning process much more efficient. This, in turn, allows me, as a Steadicam operator, to better prepare and develop creative solutions.
Furthermore, working in conjunction with LED walls and real-time visual effects allows me to experiment with more flexible and innovative movements during a shoot.
New technologies not only enhance my technical skills but also provide different perspectives that enhance the narrative. However, the fundamental principles and the human element remain at the core of my work.

What inspires you outside of work? Any unexpected influences on your style or process?
I draw inspiration from many things outside of work, some of which have unexpected impacts on my style and process. Hiking and outdoor sports, in particular, help me develop my body awareness and balance, which is crucial for Steadicam operation. Furthermore, listening to music and practicing rhythm exercises helps me make my movements more fluid and synchronized.
Art exhibitions and creative projects across disciplines also broaden my perspective and allow me to explore new avenues of expression. All these experiences, beyond my technical skills, foster a more holistic and original approach to my work.
What advice would you give to a young camera operator who dreams of mastering the Steadicam?
The most important advice I can give to a young camera operator who wants to master Steadicam is to be patient and disciplined. It’s crucial to first strengthen their basic physical conditioning and work on balance, endurance, and body control. Along with technical knowledge, they need plenty of practice to learn how to move in harmony with the scene. Furthermore, being open to different shooting styles and directors’ visions helps them develop their creative perspectives.
Prioritizing rehearsals, thoroughly familiarizing themselves with their equipment, and gaining experience at every opportunity are also critical steps toward mastery. Remember, Steadicam operation is not just a technical skill; it’s also an art form; therefore, working with passion leads to success.
Lastly, what does “being in the moment” mean to you as a camera operator?
As a camera operator, being “in the moment” means being completely present in the shot, sensing the rhythm and energy of the scene. Being aware of every moment requires me to fully focus on the actors’ movements, the lighting, environmental details, and the director’s directions.
This conscious awareness not only allows me to create technically flawless shots but also helps me best capture the emotion of the scene. Being “in the moment” also means achieving harmony between body and mind, so my movements are natural, fluid, and in sync with the scene.
In short, being fully present in the moment enhances both the quality of the work and the narrative.
What is your biggest goal?
My ultimate goal as a Steadicam operator is to achieve the highest level of mastery, both technically and artistically, and to create inspiring work in this field. My goal is to effectively realize the director’s vision in every project, creating unforgettable, captivating images.
Furthermore, by sharing my experience, I contribute to the development of the next generation of operators and make the art of Steadicam accessible to a wider audience. By remaining open to continuous learning and self-improvement, I aim to become a respected and sought-after figure in the industry.
