Hey everyone! We’re back with all the deets from the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2024 (SFFA 2024) in Los Angeles, and it was LIT!
This 2nd edition of the festival was even more exciting than last year. Over three days, we were treated to epic screenings (with crazy filmmaking), dope workshops, exclusive behind-the-scenes tours, and killer networking.
Let’s dive into the highlights!
Monday – Arrival
We kicked things off at the rooftop bar of The Shay, where first-timers and old friends met, creating instant vibes.
The evening saw us strolling along Santa Monica Beach, followed by a fun dinner at the Bubba Gump restaurant (yep, the one from Forrest Gump!).
Sony rolled out a custom menu just for us, setting the perfect tone for new friendships.

Tuesday – Day 1 SONY FEATURE FILMMAKER AWARDS 2024
Day one started with a bang at Sony Pictures Studios! We had an exclusive walk around the lot before diving into the first film screenings.
Lunch at Sony’s offices was a tasty Mexican feast, paired with intros to the Sony fam and the new Sony Burano.
Post-lunch, we did one of our favorite things we saw from the Sony Group: the feedback sessions! Here, Sony engineers and filmmakers meet to discuss specific features to improve the cameras, buttons to fix or reposition, etc.
In short, these sessions are fantastic, especially because (as we’ve learned from the filmmakers), these feedback sessions lead to real changes in the subsequent camera releases.
Next up, a studio tour showing off original props, set pieces, and even iconic vehicles. The Foley Stage visit was an absolute highlight, where sounds for major flicks come to life. The night wrapped up in style with a trip to the Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a fab dinner at Tao LA.
Let the pictures do the talking!!! Here’s some media coming your way!

The Cinema Makeup School
During our visit to the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles, we had the privilege of attending an exclusive demonstration led by the legendary Mike Spatola.

With over 40 years of experience in the makeup and FX industry, Mike Spatola has made significant contributions to iconic films such as “Terminator 2” and “Iron Man 3,” and is well-known for his work on HBO’s “Tales From The Crypt.”
His role as the Chief Academic Officer at Cinema Makeup School highlights his dedication to educating the next generation of makeup artists.
The session featured a real-time demonstration on creating realistic cuts and bruises, showcasing Spatola’s mastery in using different materials to achieve lifelike effects on a model who is an alumna of the school. This hands-on demonstration not only displayed his technical skills but also his ability to teach complex techniques understandably.
Surrounding us during the session were many incredible masks made for films like “Star Trek,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “Mission Impossible,” displayed throughout the studio, setting an inspiring backdrop to our learning experience. This environment, rich with cinematic history and creativity, provided us with a deeper appreciation of the art and science of special effects makeup.
Thursday – Day 3 SFFA
The Sony Pixomondo Virtual Stage
The final day of SFFA 2024 began at the Sony Pixomondo Virtual Production Studio, where participants had an in-depth dive into cutting-edge technologies.
Here Emanuel Williams (Virtual Production Supervisor) and Mauricio Van Hasselt ( Virtual Production On-Set Producer) gave us an insightful session about the benefits of Virtual production. Let’s make the images speak again for us since this educational piece went super viral on all our social media channels.
This stage is a powerhouse for high-quality virtual productions, specializing in intricate In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX). It’s designed to support a diverse range of projects, from commercials and TV to feature films, providing filmmakers with a state-of-the-art platform to bring their creative visions to life.
Just a few more information about this iconic place: Pixomondo (“PXO”), which is known for its work on premium content including Sony Pictures Television’s The Boys, as well as Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon and the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender, maintains three LED sound stages and seven offices in the US, UK, Germany and Canada.
The ASC hosted a mentoring session
The American Society of Cinematographers hosted a mentoring session just after the virtual production demonstration with some of its prestigious members.

This panel featured renowned directors of photography Checco Varese, known for his work on ‘Under the Bridge,’ and Alicia Camchick from ‘Bridgerton,’ and was expertly moderated by Dop Nicole Whitaker. Their guidance and shared experiences offered an enriching experience to all attendees, enhancing the learning environment of the festival.
VENICE BEACH WITH SUN
As our journey at the SFFA 2024 continued, we shifted gears and embraced a moment of relaxation and exploration at the iconic Venice Beach. Known for its spirited boardwalk, street art, and rhythmic waves that make it a paradise for surfers and artists alike, Venice Beach was the perfect setting to unwind and soak in the quintessential Californian vibe.
Here, every filmmaker and ambassador from the Sony Europe team had a unique opportunity to casually test out the latest innovation from Sony—the new Sony Burano camera with various lenses.
